One of the leading flugelhorn players in jazz dropped into the KNKX studios to celebrate his recent album Jazz Noir, and to play three cool tunes with his now-Northwest-neighbors.

We hope to see and hear a lot of Dmitri Matheny since he relocated to Centralia, Washington recently. Teaming with Seattle stalwarts Jay Thomas, Bill Anschell, Phil Sparks and D'Vonne Lewis, we were treated to a beautiful and dramatic medley of film music from his latest, as well as his original tune "Perfect Peaches" and a lovely old tune favored by trumpeter Lee Morgan and many others, "What Now My Love?".

Along the way, Dmitri talked about his move from trumpet to the instrument his mentor Art Farmer called "The Big Horn", and his love for the dramatic noir film music from Chinatown, Vertigo, and Taxi Driver. It was a lovely session with our new neighbor, and promises to be only the first of many.
