A freight dispatcher is in charge of handling the day to day operations for a trucking company. They book loads for cargo vans, box trucks, and even semis and communicate with their drivers on a day to day basis.
A freight broker is not the same as a dispatcher, a freight broker gets the loads from shippers and finds carriers to run those loads, and they get the profit from the difference in price.
You as a freight dispatcher have to be a great listener, and communicator. You have to communicate and listen to the drivers problems on a day to day basis. The goal is to negotiate the highest paying freight, the more money you make the carrier the more money you make as a dispatcher. On average a dispatcher charges anywhere from 5-10% for each load they book.
Step 1 is to get the education, no I'm not talking about going to college, I'm talking about investing into a course from someone who is knowledgeable in this industry who can help you get started so you can run a successful business.
Step 2 is register your business, you can set up your business as whatever entity you would like. I would recommend an LLC but if you're not sure then talk with a professional. Then you have to get your EIN which is free and can be done fairly quickly. I would highly recommend using "dispatch services" in your business name and not "trucking" because it can become hard to get funding for your trucking company.
Step 3 is to create your contracts, once you take the course, and have the proper understanding you will find out all of the contracts you will need for you and your carrier.
Step 4 is to create an online presence. This is important because this is how you will market your business to shippers, brokers, and even carriers. Make sure you have a landing page that displays all of your information, and you have a sales pitch that reels in your potential clients to work with you. If you have a client testimonials this will be key for new clients to have the confidence to work with a new dispatching company.
Step 5 get a load board subscription. This is where you will begin to find loads for your potential customers. You can use load boards such as DAT, TruckStop, TQL and many more. I would HIGHLY recommend that you use your carriers login information because it's 5x cheaper for carriers then brokers/dispatchers.
Step 6 find carriers to work with. This will be the most challenging this to do, it's just like finding drivers to drive for your trucking company. You have to be trusted by the carriers in order for them to work with you. At the end of the day they are trusting you to run their company, bring in them revenue and they have to pay you 5-10% of the loads that you're booking. You can handout flyers at truck stops, looking on the FMCSA website, posting ads on social media, and my favorite PAYING SOMEONE FOR A REFERRAL!!!!.
Doft load board is a FREE load board that you guys can check out, play around with the load board factor all of the cost for a potential carrier so once you do have carriers to work with you know how to calculate fees in your sleep so you guys are both profitable. It's best to get your dispatcher training trucking through out the week if you can. Dispatching for beginners can be difficult but Doft allows dispatching for hotshot loads, box truck loads, cargo van loads, and even semi loads. So make sure you use this free platform to your advantage.
Dispatching trucks can be for a box truck business, cargo van business, hotshot business, and even semi business. I recommend that you find your niche and stick with it. It's a lot harder to circle around multiple lanes, so make sure you stick to what you know so you can build dedicated lanes for the future.
