Holy Spirit Mass was commissioned to commemorate the 500th Anniversary year of the Protestant Reformation—the first reformation anniversary to take place in truly ecumenical age. The piece serves as a joint celebration of 50 years of dialogue between the Roman Catholic and Lutheran churches, which culminated in the publishing of a groundbreaking document "From Conflict to Communion" created jointly by Roman Catholic and Lutheran leaders.

Composer, Kim André Arnesen – kimarnesen.com – (b. 1980) is one of the most frequently performed classical composers from Norway today. He was educated at the Music Conservatory in Trondheim and is an elected member of the Norwegian Composers Society. Focusing on choral composition, Arnesen’s Requiem received a U.S. premiere at Carnegie Hall in January 2017. His Magnificat was nominated for a Grammy award in 2015. Additional 2017 premieres include the Oregon Bach Festival and the Texas American Choral Directors Association Conference.

The DC area premiere of Holy Spirit Mass is being presented by a partnership of Lutheran organizations, including the Metro DC Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, the Southeastern District of the Lutheran Church of the Missouri Synod and Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area, celebrating 100 years of ministry in 2017. Bishop Richard Graham of the Metropolitan DC Area Synod says, “It is a privilege for the Lutheran presenting partners in this venture share Holy Spirit Mass with our friends of all faiths—and no faith at all. We thank the Catholic Community at the National Shrine for welcoming us just as we welcome ALL to an evening of music that celebrates our shared joy in faith.”

The text for Holy Spirit Mass is based on the Ordinary of the Mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei) interspersed with the Ninth Century Veni Creator Spiritus, and Martin Luther’s great hymn, “Come Holy Spirit, God and Lord.” The resulting seven-movement work is primarily sung in English, but in a nod to two of the great languages of the Church, the Kyrie is sung in Greek, and the Agnus Dei in Latin. Themes that are prominent in the composition include mercy, grace, hope, the promise given to all by a faithful God, the vision for a reconciled future, and the commitment of mutual service to the world.

A free-will offering will be collected at the concert to benefit the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, the Lutheran Volunteer Corps and the Lutheran Young Adult Corps.
