Why were lightsaber resistant battle droids never deployed during the Clone Wars? On Metalorn, Wat Tambor and the Techno Union's engineers designed an ingenious counter to their Jedi enemies: battle droids embedded with cortosis, a rare metal that could briefly disable lightsabers. Obtaining cortosis from Jabba the Hutt, Tambor's C-B3 battle droids posed a grave threat.

The first cortosis droids stormed Coruscant, overpowering the Jedi Temple. Though the Jedi drove off the CIS invasion, the damage was done—Coruscant's safety was shattered. In response, the Jedi Council sent Anakin Skywalker to infiltrate the cortosis droid factory. While planting detonators, he eliminated three of Dooku's lieutenants, forcing Dooku himself to challenge the young Jedi. Their lightsaber duel ended with Anakin slaying Dooku, who was later revealed to have been a clone doppleganger. Returning to Coruscant, Anakin left a radioactive crater where Metalorn's cortosis droid facility once stood, ending this threat to the Republic.
