After the recent reveal of the new Chery models that will soon be launched in SA, today we got the chance to experience the Tiggo Pro4 models at the Gerotek test facility.
This will be the first model to be released in SA and falls into the Crossover/SUV category that accounts for almost 40% of current new car sales in the country. On this basis, it makes sense to have chosen this segment for their first release.
Although specific details have not been disclosed, the cars are powered by a 1.5l 4 cylinder petrol engine with turbo versions providing 108kW to the front wheels. All cars driven at the event had smooth automatic transmissions.
From handling on the skid pan, to a mild off-road course and then through the mountain pass course. The cars impressed through all, especially on the off-road when you consider that they are front wheel drive and not 4x4.
A short time with the cars looks like they are loaded with spec and show really good build quality.
Chery SA are still teasing us by not revealing pricing until the full official launch in November, but they have stated that the cars will be fully loaded with spec yet still at extremely competitive pricing.
Launching a new brand in SA is a massive challenge, even worse to re-launch when the previous attempt was not very successful. Yet, talking to the Chery team and experiencing the cars, its clear that they are serious about the future and have full backing from the Mothership in China to succeed this time around.
Medium and Large SUV models are scheduled to be added to the range during 2022.
