BACKGROUND: Against the odds and a chorus of naysayers, community members are coming together in Rutland, Vermont to transform an old industrial site into a dynamic new agricultural center -- a driver of better health, new businesses and expanding markets all built around farming and locally grown food. Reclaiming one of the most blighted properties from the city's manufacturing past, these volunteers are working to write a new story for the future of Rutland and its economy. The VERMONT FARMERS FOOD CENTER will be the new permanent home of the Rutland Winter Farmers Market (the largest of its kind in the state) along with operations for its partners, the Vermont Food Bank and the Rutland Community Cupboard. Future plans include a full renovation of the buildings, a commercial kitchen, an aggregation / distribution center, and year-round educational programs.
