Ellen Degeneres is a name that actually meant something a few years back, at least to the daytime TV crowd. She was formally known for her interviews and generosity, at least when the cameras were rolling. before that she was a stand-up comic and actress for quite some time. But it was the Ellen show that absolutely skyrocketed her to mass acclaim and popularity. She started her show back in 2003 and gained worldwide popularity for another 19 seasons. #ellendegeneres
But all that came crashing down in the year 2020. Among those 19 seasons, Ellen had been gaining a bit of a reputation behind the scenes but not in a good way. To me Ellen always seemed pretty disingenuous and fake, but the subtle hints of her personality throughout the show were nothing compared to what was actually happening behind the scenes.
In July 2020, allegations surfaced against Ellen DeGeneres, accusing her of fostering a "toxic" workplace environment on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Former employees reported incidents of racism, intimidation, and failure to address harassment by executives. Additional claims included discrimination against employees of color, unfair firings, and crew replacement with non-union workers during the early stages of the pandemic. Buzzfeed article on Ellen controversy. Ellen Allegations are backed by crew quotes.
In response to mounting scrutiny, Warner Bros. Entertainment's Telepictures unit launched an internal investigation involving interviews with current and former show employees to address concerns raised about the workplace culture. DeGeneres admitted responsibility for the issues and vowed to rectify them going forward.
Resulting from the investigation, three executives departed from the show and steps were promised to transform its culture. DeGeneres issued apologies both in writing and during the opening of the show's eighteenth season in September 2020. She did this alongside other apologies in the same vein.
This was apparently clear with Ellen’s interview with Dakota Johnson. At this point, Johnson had been on the show a few times and this particular time Ellen questioned her about not being invited to Johnson’s birthday in she quickly striked back saying “I did invite you”. This may seem like a passive-aggressive interaction but looking at it closer you can see the lack of responsibility and care that Ellen showcases in the span of 30 seconds. She seems dismissive and just straight unaware.
This isn’t the first time that Ellen was rude to her guests in the span of her 19-season run. One of the gags that she was known for was scaring her guests with their fears. On paper it sounds like a harmless gag, but the idea of using someone’s phobias against them on live TV for a few laughs and without their consent seems a bit evasive to say the least.
In one instance she shoved a porcelain doll in Channing Tatum’s face after he revealed that he had a fear of them, it's awkward and you can tell how uncomfortable he is. In another instance she brought out a spider to scare Kim Kardashian, despite her telling her no and that she was not interested. It ended up being a fake spider but the discomfort was there. Regardless of who it is, celebrities or not, doing this on live TV for a quick laugh is not only cheap but cringy above all. She also didn’t really seem to care that much and found it to be quite funny. While this might not be the biggest deal in the scope of things, it shows straight careless and starkness. For someone who pushes kindness and accepting others in every waking turns
