Ford has begun building its $5.6 billion electric vehicle plant in Tennessee, USA. And when completed, it will be the most cutting-edge automotive complex in the company's 119-year existence.
Now, when production begins in 2025, the 15.5 square kilometer facility will be known as Blue Oval City. And it is anticipated that 6,000 people will be employed there.
Production of a "revolutionary all-new electric truck" and batteries for future Ford and Lincoln automobiles are set to take place at the western Tennessee facility.
Ford currently has three electric vehicles, which are the Mustang Mach-E crossover, the F-150 Lightning truck, and the E-Transit commercial van.
The Dearborn, Michigan-based company claimed the cutting-edge facility will aid in its plan to produce 2 million electric vehicles annually around the globe by 2026.
According to Eric Grubb, Ford's director of new footprint production, this facility will serve as the model for all of the automaker's future production plants. Ford can then take the lead in the electric vehicle movement in the United States.
Ford has stated that it has already erected over 4,600 deep foundations and placed 370,000 tonnes of stone at the site.
Bill Lee, the governor of Tennessee, also weighed in on the topic. According to him, Ford's massive investment in west Tennessee is evidence of the state's thriving economy and exceptional labor force.
The automaker has already begun working with SK innovation, a South Korean battery company, to construct two battery facilities in the state of Kentucky.
Moreover, an additional 5,000 people are going to be hired by these factories.
Up until the year 2026, Ford has promised to spend $50 billion on electric vehicles.
CEO Jim Farley predicted that by 2030, battery-powered vehicles would account for more than half of the company's sales.
And Ford's battery-powered plans attempt to compete with Tesla, which is owned by Elon Musk.
In 2021, Tesla was the undisputed leader in electric vehicle sales, which overall saw an 83% increase in sales in the United States. And roughly 193,000 Model Ys and 108,000 Model 3s were sold by Tesla last year.
Now, the Ford Mustang Mach-E landed in third place with a total of 27,140 units sold. FORD'S COMMITMENT
Ford is now planning to make a significant impact in the electric vehicle industry. According to Bob Holycross, Ford's vice president of sustainability, electric vehicles will help revitalize the almost 120-year old automaker.
The American car manufacturer is currently amidst a massive rebranding effort. Also, its plan to electrify its most recognizable vehicles has proven successful thus far.
The Mustang Mach-e was the first iteration of Ford's renowned sports car to be converted to electric.
As of September 2022, Ford has sold 25,765 units of the Mach-e, making it the company's best-selling electric vehicle.
In fact, there were 3,120 sales of Mach-e in August, which is an increase of 115% over August 2021. And in April, Ford introduced the world's first mass-produced electric pickup truck, the F-150 Lightning. Ford's best-selling truck line is the F-series, and the Lightning is every bit as good as the rest of them.
As expected, demand for the Ford F-150 Lightning has increased since its debut, with 6,842 units sold so far.
An electric pickup truck produced by the carmaker has been shipped to all 50 states. And August was the best month for EV truck sales to date, with 2,373 units sold.
