America's heartland is preparing for an ecological event it hasn't seen in 221 years. Two groups, or broods, of cicadas are emerging from underground and billions, if not trillions of the insects are expected to begin serenading parts of the Midwest with their cacophonous mating call. Different cicada broods come out every 13 or 17 years, but this year their appearances are occurring simultaneously, which hasn't happened since 1803, the same year as the Louisiana Purchase. Dr. Gene Kritsky, joins to tell us more about cicadas themselves, what they are and what role they play in our ecosystem. Dr. Kritsky shares why they make so much noise. He discusses the 2 groups of cicadas and where we should expect to see or hear the majority of the activity. He fills us in on how special this summer's occurrence of dual-emergence is.
