This video shows how James Gibbs' patented looper forms a chain stitch. You can see how the hook grabs the loop formed by the needle, and hangs onto it by transfering it to the other lobe of looper, where it will be caught by the next pass of the needle. This invention revolutionized chain stitch sewing machines. (The camera view actually gets a little better about half-way through the video.)
