Paula Sojo, 19, from Canada, first started developing symptoms for Crohn's disease back in October 2020. As her health quickly deteriorated, Paula was rushed to hospital where she received an official diagnosis for the inflammatory bowel disease. Paula endured eight months in hospital and 14 operations, before surgeons eventually revealed she would need a proctocolectomy, a procedure which involves removing the colon and rectum, and replacing it with an ostomy bag. Paula told Truly, "I was really devastated. I was thinking there's going to be this bag of poo on me and I'm going to feel so ugly." But two months after the operation, Paula decided to start embracing the ostomy bag. Taking to TikTok to share her journey, Paula soon racked up 129,000 followers. Around this time, Paula also started making ostomy bag covers to match her outfits. Paula explained, "It felt like the ostomy was a part of me and not just something on me. I was taking control and trying to turn it into something positive."
