Valladolid remains an absolute favorite place to travel in Mexico. It is vibrant, authentic and unique. In town, you’ll fall in love with the colorful streets and colonial architecture, especially Calzada de los Frailes (AKA Calle de los Frailes), for some Valladolid shopping. There are also great restaurants in Valladolid, and historic sites.
Valladolid Mexico, located in Yucatán state, is an increasingly popular Mexico travel destination. It is also one of the country’s 135 or so pueblos magicos (Mexico magic towns), and known as one of the most beautiful colonial cities in Mexico — so get that camera ready.
Valladolid is located approximately 170 km (105 mi) east of the state capital Mérida, 40 km (25 mi) east of Chichén Itzá, and 150 km (93 mi) west of Cancún.
In downtown Valladolid is the Cathedral of San Servacio (named after Saint Servatius), located in the main square of the city. The center of the city's grid-like road structure features a plaza — Parque Principal Francisco Cantón Rosado — surrounded by restaurants and shops.
Valladolid has a structured road service which makes it easy to travel around. Travellers driving through the Yucatán Peninsula have the option of taking the federal road or the toll route and both roads go through Valladolid. In the city there are taxi services at reasonable rates and public transportation which is popular for students and locals but not recommended for tourists.
Aside from all the pretty pictures you can take in Downtown Valladolid, there’s also great shopping on the gorgeous Calzada de los Frailes, amazing restaurants in Valladolid to sample authentic Yucatecan cuisine, cenotes near Valladolid, Mayan Ruins just outside of town, and much more!
From wandering its colorful streets to exploring the cenotes of Valladolid, to immersing yourself in Mayan culture and history, there are so many things to do here.Whatever you do, a visit to Valladolid should be on every traveler’s list!
At about 100 miles from Merida and Cancun, and 65 miles from Tulum, many Yucatan Peninsula travelers will often also visit Valladolid. Though it makes a great day trip — many stay overnight in one of these best Valladolid hotels.
