Today we are looking at Caravaggio's The Calling of St. Matthew painted in 1600 and copying a section of it using an airbrush with acrylic paint on canvas. We will be exploring the techniques used Caravaggio (chiaroscuro, tenebrism, etc.) and doing our best to emulate the styles of the old masters of the late Italian renaissance and early baroque period all while using modern painting equipment. Caravaggio immediatly rose to fame around the year 1600 when he was commissioned to paint the two side walls of the alter at the Contarelli Chapel in Rome. One of the 3 paintings he completed is the one we are copying today. This of course is The Calling of Saint Matthew. Thanks for watching!
