Tobacco Free Jordan began when Larissa Al-Uar and another mother grew upset seeing someone smoking cigarettes at a children’s birthday party. The grassroots group now works to protect all of Jordan’s youth—and their work is urgent. The nation has one of the highest smoking rates in the world. It’s on the rise, too, as the tobacco industry targets young people with its products, packaging and promotions. Knowledge is key, Al-Uar says, to safeguarding kids from an industry that “will do and say anything” to hook new users.
In STOP’s (@exposetobacco’s) series, “Lives at Stake: True Stories of People Challenging Big Tobacco,” hear Larissa Al-Uar's shares how protecting her 4-year-old from secondhand smoke inspired her to advocate for all of Jordan’s youth.
The series explores health advocates' experiences of the issues documented in the Global Tobacco Industry Interference Index, a tool that guides policymakers on how to prevent industry meddling.
