Hurricane Beryl, which hit the Caribbean in early July, was the first in a string of severe Atlantic storms in 2024. This was stated by specialists from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) of the United Nations, according to the organization’s website. At the time of this video's creation, Beryl had passed through Jamaica and the Yucotan Peninsula (Mexico) and entered the Gulf of Mexico. Due to its passage over land, the hurricane has weakened to a tropical storm with wind speeds of 95 km/h (59 mph) and is heading towards Texas (USA). It is expected that the storm could intensify again, fueled by warm waters from the Gulf of Mexico, and then make landfall along the Texas coast. The hurricane is forecast to hit the Texas coast near Houston on Sunday evening with wind speeds of 150 km/h (93 mph) and move deeper into the US, gradually weakening. Strong winds, heavy rainfall, storm surges along the coast are expected, and flooding and landslides are also possible in hilly areas.
Beryl was the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season and the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record, and scientists point to its rapid intensification. Before reaching Mexico, Beryl caused devastation on several Caribbean islands. It swept through Jamaica, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, in addition to heavy rainfall in northern Venezuela. It claimed at least 11 lives, destroying buildings, downing power lines and trees.
The destruction on the islands of Grenada was particularly noticeable. Grenada Prime Minister Deacon Mitchell pointed out severe damage to homes in Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique during a video briefing. Parts of the latter two islands were "almost completely devastated," he said.
Research conducted by the ClimaMeter consortium has shown that climate change has significantly increased Beryl's exposure. According to the study, the severity of the storm, as well as the associated rainfall and wind speeds, increased by 10-30%.
