1. Before Contact - it is important to improve your anticipation and ability to spot the oncoming short ball and react quickly in starting the movement forward. Knowing the correct footwork pattern in getting up to the ball and how to position yourself when you get there will buy you time to set up for the ball.

2. During Contact (will be covered in part 2) - to execute the shot you need the correct footwork and technique while hitting the ball to make sure you can get power and accuracy on the ball.

3. After Contact (will be covered in part 2) - knowing where to recover depending on where you have hit your shot and if you are coming forward or staying back is a vital part of the execution which will help take the pressure off having to take high risks trying hit a winner, instead you can position yourself in a way to make the odds of winning the point heavily in your favour.
