The Roman poet Ovid's popular work "Ars Amatoria" was written as a kind of hook-up handbook for first-century Romans, and it offers a range of advice - some of it outdated and some still surprisingly useful - on how to land a date in ancient Rome.
Though the poet was eventually exiled for his controversial verses, Ovid and his writings provide us with a stunningly frank portrait of sex and relationships during the reign of Augustus. His opinions on Roman makeup, dating, relationships and fashion are valuable sources for helping us reconstruct the daily lives of women in ancient Rome.
