Severe flash floods in Pakistan have put a third of the country underwater and killed more than 1,100 people. Unprecedented monsoon rainfall over 8 consecutive weeks has led to the floods, which could cost Pakistan more than $10 billion. The damage to infrastructure and farmland could also kick off a food security crisis. Satellite images from Planet Labs PBC and obtained by Reuters show the scale of the flooding in and across Pakistan’s provinces.

Weather experts tie the intensity of extreme weather like this to the climate crisis. According to the Washington Post, for ‘every degree of warmer temperature, the air can hold about 4% more water.’ The climate crisis has been tied to longer dry spells and intense storms, which can exacerbate flooding. This has been one of the worst monsoon seasons in over a decade for Pakistan; in 2010, flooding killed more than 1,700 people.
Despite Pakistan experiencing dramatic impacts of the climate crisis, the country has contributed very little to its cause. Sherry Rehman, Pakistan’s federal minister for climate change, told Sky News, ‘Pakistan is less than 1% in the global emissions ‘pie’, if you like. We hardly contribute any emissions to the broader emission blanket that makes for greenhouse gasses to turn our climate into a living hell.’
