Kevin Costner’s self-financed Western ‘Horizon’ has bombed at the box office
Western Horizon: An American Saga, which Kevin Costner self-financed, has been a box office disaster.
The film is the first of four chapters that will tell several stories in the American West over a period of twelve years.
With Sienna Miller, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sam Worthington, Ella Hunt, Isabelle Fuhrman, and Jena Malone among its cast, the first installment was primarily funded by Costner, who contributed approximately $98 million (£77 million) of his personal funds to the production.
As of right now, the movie has made a meager $11 million (£8.6 million) at the US box office, according to Slash film.
Critics mainly criticized Horizon after its May Cannes premiere, calling it "a clumsy slog beyond saving," according to David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter.
In his Guardian review, Peter Bradshaw rated the movie only two stars. "Aside from a few mildly entertaining moments, the film moseys along, leaving you guessing as to when and whether it is going to be interesting," the reviewer stated.
However, Robbie Collin of The Telegraph gave it a higher rating, writing, "The film is earnest yet hopeful, with crisply drawn characters - though perhaps its full grandeur won't be fully realized until part two." Collin gave the movie four stars.
The film did get a lengthy, seven-minute standing ovation at Cannes, which left Costner very distraught despite the generally poor reviews.
Recently, Costner retaliated against reviewers who voiced concerns with the movie's portrayal of Native Americans.
Cinemas are now showing Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1. August 16 is the publishing date of Chapter 2.
