Something that we are missing in the west that the east has known for thousands of years, for health -- is the use of spices in our food. We've grown up thinking that spices were just something that made food more interesting or was something to make it taste good. We didn't realize that spices are actually like little packets of intelligence. Little packets of herbs that actually have tremendous health benefits. Not only do they help us digest our food, but also they can have antioxidant properties, immune enhancing properties. Basically, they have concentrated food with all sorts of health-giving properties. So we should get in the habit of using spices with our meals. Now, of course, depending on the type of food you are having, you may prefer so types of spices over others. If you are having Italian food, you may want basil and oregano, thyme and sage. Those also are tremendously packed will compounds that enhance our immunity and help digestion. Every traditional cuisine has its traditional spices. The long traditional cultures from the east particularly, and even southern Europe have this tradition of spices. So, use spices with your cooking, particularly if you have digestive problems such as gas or bloating -- you may want to include a spice like fennel seeds, which have been shown in research to help the downward flow and inhibit spasms. Fennel seeds inhibit gripping or cramping in the intestines. They also help the downward flow. Cumin helps our digestive process. Coriander stimulates our liver to detoxify from any toxins that come in with the food, or anything that we might be exposed to. Turmeric also has tremendous immune-enhancing and detoxification effects for our body.
If you have gas or bloating, use spices with your cooking. And try making some fennel tea. Not that you add fennel to black tea. But you just boil some water with a few seeds of fennel, maybe a quarter teaspoon per a couple of cups. And then drink this tea with your meal and afterward. This tea will help you digest and help with any gas or bloating.
One of my favorite products to help digestion is called Herbal Di-Gest. Herbal Di-Gest takes advantage of the principle of synergy. That several herbs and spices together in the same formula have enhancing properties that make the whole greater than the sum of the parts. So the product itself is more powerful than any of the ingredients alone. Also, those ingredients help to balance each other, so any negative side effects are prevented. In Herbal Di-Gest there is one particular ingredient that is especially good for gas or bloating -- that that is Asafoetida. Asafoetida is especially good if there is bloating and the gas doesn't seem to go out of the body. Asafoetida helps with the downward flow through the intestine. So it helps gas breakup and go out of the body without causing painful bloating.
So, the lesson is, let's do like the ancients and take advantage of the wisdom from the east and start cooking regularly with spices -- Your digestion will be better and it will help with your overall health.
