Sudden loss of vision can be painful or painless. Most commonly we encounter painless sudden loss of vision. The causes of sudden loss of vision are multiple. It can be retinal detachment. Retina is the light sensitive layer behind the eye. Once it gets detached from its attachment., it can lead to sudden loss of vision. The retinal detachment may be caused due to various reasons. Most common is retinal holes or weak areas in the retina injury to the eye can lead to retinal detachment and lead to sudden loss of vision. Second cause is vitreous hemorrhage or what is called as hemorrhage it the eye. Vitreous is a jelly lie substance behind the eye. It acts like a shock absorber. Once bleeding occurs the vitreous cavity , it is called as vitreous hemorrhage. The causes of vitreous hemorrhage can be multiple, it may be due to injury or diabetic retinopathy. In stage of diabetes, there can be vitreoeus hemorrhage and sudden loss of vision. The other cause can be stroke in the eye called as the central retinal vein occlusion or central retinal artery occlusion. This occlusion occurs due to a systemic condition like heart problem or because of controlled diabetes or the artery gets suddenly blocked and leads to sudden loss of vision. Uncontrolled hypertension or uncontrolled diabetes can lead to Sudden loss of vision or sudden migraines, occasionally applied as ocular migraine.
