Jacob Wiener was born in Bremen, Germany in 1917. In 1933, Hitler rose to power and immediately implemented anti-Jewish laws and restrictions. During Kristallnacht (“The Night of Broken Glass,” a widespread mob attack on Jews and their property in Germany) in 1938, Jacob was arrested and imprisoned for eight days. When he returned home, he learned that his mother had been murdered. In 1939, Jacob and his surviving family members fled Germany to Canada.

In this clip, Jacob recalls being taught eugenics at school and bravely refuting his teacher’s racist claims.
