Apple has sold an incredible 170 million units of the iPad since it was launched making it the best selling tablet in the world
In 2010, Apple's founder Steve Jobs unveiled the original iPad to huge popular acclaim and commercial success.
Easy to use and weighing just 1.5lbs, it revolutionised the tablet market, selling 300,000 on its first day on the market. It went on to sell 15 million units.
The company launched next generation in 2011, the iPad 2 was 33 per cent thinner and 15 per cent lighter. The popularity of its faster processor and improved graphics helped secure Apple's dominant market position.
Developments came with increased display resolution with the iPad 3 in March 2012, and increased processing power in the iPad 4 in September the same year.
The iPad Mini – the company's first 7.9-inch tablet – followed close behind.
The lighter, thinner, faster and more powerful, iPad Air, in October 2013, added a 64-bit A7 chip which also powered iPad Mini 2.
Now the company is expected to unveil a 9.7-inch device possibly called the 'iPad Air 2' or the 'iPad 6', thought to be a continuation of the current iPad model, and a 12.9-inch 'iPad Pro', which will be a larger, faster version of the current tablet on Oct 16.
