Storm Kills One, Destroys Several HomesThe Associated PressOfficials in New Hampshire say at least one person is dead -- the result of a swath of storms that destroyed or severely damaged at least a half-dozen homes. (July 24)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] A storm rips through central New Hampshire...leaving at least 1 person dead and destroying several homes in its path.((Bill Hansen SOT:The whole lake came up about a foot, right on to the beach. I didn't see any waves. It just came right up, sloshed in and took my rowboat out, pushed a few bricks onto the lawn.))Some of Bill Hansen's neighbors say they believe that was the work of a tornado.((Betsy McQuiston SOT: It was a very loud wind and then a huge roar. It seemed like it was spinning around the cottage. ))The National Weather Service had issued a warning for the area. Agency officials will check out the damage Friday to determine if the storm really was a twister.For now...residents are trying to deal with the mess left behind.((Nancy Madden: My roof was ripped off, deck is gone...trees are everywhere.))Thousands of homes and business are without power and at least 100 homes have been damagedSome of the lake's cottages were left in such bad shape that emergency officials made them off limits...even to homeowners.((Fire official NATS: This isn't safe...You have to leave until we say you can come back.Betsy McQuiston SOT: I'm lucky were alive. Very. But I'm sorry that my house isn't in such good shape. )) New Hampshire Governor John Lynch has declared an emergency in 5 counties and the National Guard has been called up to help.
