The Eternal Sorrow of Lin'an
Our 114th Isolation Commission features Dai-Lin Hsieh bringing us an incredible performance on the zheng. Commissioned by Kathryn Allison we're thrilled to have this amazing performer as part of this project, and to have another new instrument represented.
The Eternal Sorrow of Lin'an《臨安遺恨》is a guzheng concerto based on the tragedy of Yue Fei (1103-1142), a great national hero and famous general, who was put into prison in Lin'an and murdered there by the capitulationist officials headed by traitor Qin Hui. The music expresses the grief and indignation of Yue Fei in prison. Dai-Lin plays the first third of the piece in this video.
Dai-Lin Hsieh, one of the most talented zheng performers of her generation, is very active on stage as a soloist and chamber music player in Taiwan and abroad. Performing with precision and astonishing techniques, She has been invited to perform in Asian countries, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium ect. In recent years, Dai-Lin has given many solo recitals internationally and premiered a number of important Taiwanese zheng compositions. In 2019, Dai-Lin lives in Vancouver, BC. Focusing her music carrer in Guzheng performance and teaching, Dai-Lin currently is cooperating with Orchid Ensemble, Vancouver Inter-culture Orchestra, BC Chinese Orchestra and Turning Point Ensemble.
To support front line artists in this unprecedented time, and to foster reflections on that time from our musical community, Little Chamber Music has created the Isolation Commissions.
For $200, commissioners got to choose an artist to film a 4min video of themselves performing at home, something that reflects the impact our extraordinary social situation is having on their artistic practice. It might be an improvisation, a favourite piece, a work that brings comfort, a work in progress….that was up to the artist.
These videos are meant to be a snapshot of the lives of front-line artists who have been heavily impacted by our current crisis, and the hope is that, when we get through this, collectively they will form an artistic reflection of this unprecedented and difficult time.
