How different is A. Lange & Söhne's 2017 Lange 1 Moon Phase from its older “siblings”?
What other features does it have in addition to the characteristic Lange outsize date, the power reserve indicator and the moon phase display?
Well, did you manage to spot the day and night indicator?
In the 2017 Lange 1 Moon Phase, a separate “cut-out” of two moons is used and it orbits on its own rather than a single rotating disc with two moons.
Behind the “cut-out” double moon is a celestial disc that makes one revolution every 24 hours. This is therefore the day and night display disc.
During the day, a bright blue sky without stars is seen and at night, a dark sky with laser-cut stars.
We found Lange’s moon cake box given to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival very useful as it had a “manual” system that can be used to explain how the day and night disc works behind the “cut-out” double moon indicator.
