Information throughout Hesiod's Theogony is spread across various parts of the peom, which require the reader to reconstruct certain parts of it. At the beginning of the book, in the part more commonly known as the proem, we are told about the Graces, but who exactly are the Graces? They are three goddesses, known as Aglaea, Euphrosyne, and Thalia. Their father is Zeus, which makes them half-sisters to the Muses. The mother of the Graces is a goddess named Mnemosyne.
With what concerns the primordial gods and goddesses, Xaos is often translated as Chaos, but the modern definition (a lack of organization and structure) wrongfully leads to preconceived notions of what the early Greeks intended. A more accurate translation is Chasm, and for such reason it is the one we will use throughout our explanations.
