What to do Before Landslides
Make and discuss a family communication plan.
Prepare an emergency or survival kit.
Family Communication Plan Includes:
1.Pick a meeting place when you need to leave your home or your neighborhood needs to evacuate.
2. Draw a map on your neighborhood, include your home, school and your meeting place.
3. Draw a floor plan of your house emphasizing Pre - determined way out or exit point.
4. Medical contacts
5. Family information
Follow proper land use procedures..
Avoid:
1. Building near steep slopes;
2. Close to mountain edges;
3. Near drainage ways; or
4. Along natural erosion valleys.
Become familiar with the land around you.
Know if the area has experienced debris flows. If it has occurred in the past, it is more likely to experience it in the future.
Consult professional for advice on appropriate preventive measures to protect your property.
Planting ground cover plants on slopes and building retaining walls will help to hold the soil.
Build channels or deflection walls to direct the flow around buildings.
What to do During Landslides
Evacuate immediately if warned of an impending landslide or mudflow.
Stay away from the path of landslide debris, or seek refuge behind a sturdy tree or boulder.
