John Force injury update: NHRA legend hospitalized after dangerous crash at Virginia Nationals
Longtime National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) racer John Force is in the hospital after he was involved in a dangerous crash during the first round of eliminations at the NHRA Virginia Nationals.
Force, 75, won his heat at the qualifying event with a 302 mph run, but his car was engulfed in flames after the engine exploded following his finish.
He has been ingrained in the NHRA circuit for 46 years now, making his debut back in 1978. Force's resume is extensive and impressive, consisting of 157 titles and 16 season championships.

Force was released from intensive care and airlifted to a a neurological rehabilitation center. His team posted the update to X on Tuesday, July 9.
"The 16-time NHRA Funny Car Champion’s departure from the facility to which he was airlifted after crashing at more than 300 miles per hour was considered by family members to be a major step forward in the recovery process," the statement read.It's positive news for Force, though his recovery is still in its early stages. There isn't a timetable for how long he'll have to stay at the rehab center, which is known for treating racers with similar injuries. It's expected to be a "difficult" journey back.
"Force is dealing with cognitive and behavioral symptoms from the TBI and, while he has been able to converse with family and staff, enjoy the company of grandsons Jacob and Noah Hood and celebrate a Monday birthday with daughter Brittany, he still is prone to periods of confusion," the statement read.
Force was in intensive care at a Virginia hospital on Monday. John Force Racing sent out an update out.Attending doctors purposely were moving slowly in assessing the extent of the injuries to the Hall of Fame owner and driver because of the intensity of the impact," the statement read. "Medical staff will not provide a treatment and recovery timeline until a total evaluation is completed."
The statement concludes by saying that more updates will be released "at the discretion of the medical staff."
Another update was provided Thursday, June 27. It said Force was improving but faces a "long road ahead" in his recovery, per a statement from Courtney Force.The statement also announced that Brittany Force would not compete at this week's Summit Racing Equipment Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio. Instead, Austin Prock will compete this weekend and "carry the torch for the entire John Force Racing organization and sponsors this weekend."
"The Force family are grateful for the team of medical professionals who are caring for John, and for the overwhelming number of heartfelt messages of prayer, support, and concern," the statement read. "Thank you for continuing to respect the privacy of the family and John Force Racing team members."The driver was able to escape the flames, but was immediately treated by medical staff at the track. He was then transported to a nearby hospital via helicopter.
