In the birthplace of modern fascism, Matteo Salvini’s ‘Italy First’ message gained the support of the far right who saw him as a fierce defender of Italy’s borders.
But many Black Italians say that Matteo Salvini’s language put targets on their backs. A failed candidate for Salvini’s own political party hunted down people of African origin in a prolonged shooting spree, and Salvini’s own actions while in power led to hundreds of migrants becoming stranded at sea.
In this episode of Decade of Hate, host Tim Hume looks at how Salvini is facing kidnapping charges for orders he made while in office, and how experts argue that his divisive language has left a lasting imprint on Italian politics.
