During the Second World War, military units and partisan groups organized by both Soviet and communist party bodies operated on the territory of Ukraine as part of the Resistance Movement. One such unit under the command of Sydir Kovpak was sent deep into the enemy rear in occupied right-bank Ukraine in the Carpathians at the order of the partisan movement’s headquarters. The Soviet command and Stalin personally pinned great hopes on this 2,000-kilometer long campaign. But the Carpathian raid did not fulfil its main objective. Kovpak’s unit did not receive public support and did not manage to start a mass pro-Soviet partisan movement in the Carpathian region.
