For years, Bruce Schreiber struggled with his weight. When every diet failed, he decided to see a dietitian at the Wellness Center in Cape Coral.
“I was stuck more than anything else. I’ve done it all” said Bruce. “I’ve done all kinds of diets and plans and different exercises.”
Julie Hill, a registered dietitian with Lee Memorial Health System, says it’s all about finding a balance between what you eat and how you exercise. She suggested Bruce keep a food journal. “When you’re writing things down, you’re accountable to yourself” she said. “This isn’t about a diet. The journal helps to establish a lifestyle trend as opposed to just a diet.”
Bruce was also given an exercise plan. Each week he and Hill would review his meals, weight, blood pressure, and discuss any challenges he was facing.
“Stress encourages different food habits. A lot of times identifying the different emotion that’s causing you to go to that food can be really helpful” said Hill.
Over six months, Bruce lost 40 pounds. “At first it takes dedication, if you will, but then it’s just a matter of habit. You have to look them in the face and step on the scale and know all of that is going to happen, so it’s more about accountability” said Bruce.
He would still like to lose 50 pounds more, but his long term goals are focused on getting and staying healthy.
