There are two types of energy efficient bulbs: Compact Fluorescent, or CFLs and, Light Emitting Diode, or LEDs.
Both come in a range of colour temperatures from warm (yellow) to cool (blue):
Warmer light promotes relaxation - great for public places, like maybe a lobby or waiting room.
Cooler light temperatures improve concentration so are used in office spaces.
So why is it a bright idea for your small business to upgrade your lighting? Well, I'll give you 3 reasons.
1. Savings
CFLs use 75% less energy than traditional light bulbs and LEDs use 75-80% less. For example, A 12 Watt LED bulb that is on for 12 hours a day will last 5.5 years and will cost about $4.30 in energy costs per year. Your average 60 watt incandescent will cost about $22 per year in energy and last only 3 or 4 months.
Using less energy instantly helps your bottom line, and for a small business with tight profit margins, that's a big deal. As an example, a 12 Watt LED will cost you about $4.30 in energy over a year, where the average 60 watt incandescent costs about $22. That can really add up.
2. Low Maintenance
As a small business owner myself, I know time is precious and since energy-efficient lights last much longer, you spend less time going up and down that ladder and can focus on more important things.
CFLs last 10 times as long and LEDs can last 25 times longer than your standard incandescent bulbs.
3.Cost Incentives
So, they cost less to operate, they last longer, and on top of that - BC Hydro Power Smart offers businesses incentiveswhen you upgrade to efficient lighting. That's even more money back in your pocket.
So, the initial fixture cost may be higher, but with lower energy use, less maintenance and cash incentives, upgrading is a no brainer.
