HADI-HOUTHIS TALKS
Yemeni President Abd Rabuh Mansour Hadi is set to begin peace talks with Iranian-backed Houthi militias under the auspices of the United Nations in Geneva by June 10. Hadi agreed to meet on the condition that Houthis hand over their weapons before he participates in the talks. His decision comes after a visit by US Assistant Secretary of State for Near-Eastern Affairs Anne Patterson in Riyadh.
HEZBOLLAH OFFENSIVE
Hezbollah has seized ground from militants near the Lebanon-Syria border.The Iranian-backed Lebanese group said its fighters had seized three hilltops in the mountainous area east of the Lebanese town of Arsal, where last August, Nusra Front and ISIS had launched an offensive. Hezbollah’s operation in the Qalamoun mountains north of Damascus is part of Assad’s effort to shore up his control over western Syria.
9/11 REPORT
Former Florida Senator Bob Graham, who co-chaired the first official investigation into the 9/11 attacks in 2002, joined a group of US congressional members as they publicly called for the release of the classified material from an intelligence report into the World Trade xCenter attacks. The politicians argue that the 28 pages of classified tet refers to allegations that Saudi Arabian officials were involved in helping to organise the attacks.
NEW MERS CASES
South Korea has confirmed five more cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, bringing the number of infected people in the country to 30. South Korea reported its first instance of MERS two weeks ago and that two people died of the virus on June 2nd. The country has isolated about 1,300 people for possible MERS infection.The new cases would bring the total number globally to 1,166, based on World Health Organization data, with at least 436 related deaths.
