Gates of Music
The Gates of Music project is honoured to introduce David Bailey, who is a solo Pipe Organ player.
Keeping alive the delicate art of motion picture accompaniment.
A combination of traditional keyboard studies, an interest in composition, and years of experience in theatre organ performance have put David in the unique position necessary to carry on the traditions of silent film accompaniment.
David, who performs regularly in concert and for film screenings around the country, has resided at the console of the ex-Brisbane Regent Theatre Wurlitzer Organ in its new home at GOMA since the gallery opened in 2007.
1929 WURLITZER
This Wurlitzer Pipe Organ was originally in Brisbane’s Regent Theatre which opened on 8 November 1929, installed on an electric lift to the left of the orchestra pit.
Once removed from the Regent Theatre in 1964, the Wurlitzer remained in private ownership in New South Wales until it was negotiated to be returned to Queensland in 2004 when it underwent restoration and was installed in the Australian Cinémathèque when GOMA opened in December 2006. Rechristened in early 2007, it has hardly been altered over the years and remains an important part of Queensland’s cultural heritage, now used regularly to score classic silent films under the fingers of talented organists.
The Gates of Music Series tries to introduce urban corners and Brisbane's icons with a piece of music played by a local musician.
The project believes every corner is a stage.
