Mayor of Toronto John Tory said on Wednesday that the city council will meet virtually on Thursday for the first time in the city’s history to deal with any urgent business and to discuss the ongoing emergency.
He added that he will ask the council to extend the state of emergency brought about by COVID-19 so the city's government continue to be able to deal with the situation.
He said he will also ask the council to endorse a modular housing initiative that will see the quick creation of a 110 supportive housing units ready for occupancy early this fall and then a 110 more supportive housing units to be ready by next year.
Mayor Tory announced on Wednesday that the city has partnered with the Times Group corporation to provide 125 apartments as temporary housing for people living in encampments in Toronto amid serious public health concerns regarding the spread of COVID-19.
He said that the city will be offering furnished units with on-site support including meals, 24/7 staff and harm reduction support for the residents of those units.
He also said that the city will be delivering a virtual experience in the form of a 24/7 live stream of High Park's famous cherry blossoms blooming on its website starting today.
Toronto reported a total of 5,360 cases of COVID-19 including 4,845 confirmed cases and 515 probable cases in Toronto as of Wednesday.
The city also reported a total of 354 hospitalizations and 347 deaths from COVID-19 as of Wednesday.
