If you hear people clapping at night for 10 long minutes, they are probably not watching their favorite football game. Here is why.
Imagine you are in the in the Soviet Union of 1950s, and comrade Stalin is on stage, delivering yet another inspiring speech. The crowd is going crazy, clapping and cheering. And then, the speech ends but the clapping doesn't, but why?
Well, simply because people feared being accused of disloyalty to Stalin's leadership.
In an instance, the director of a paper factory stopped clapping after 11 minutes of standing ovation and sat down in his seat, causing others to stop dead and sit down. That same night, he was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison on a lame political pretext. And when he signed his interrogation document form 206, his interrogator told him:
“Don’t you ever be the first to stop clapping!”
