Critics are slamming the UK government for amendments to the Renters Reform Bill that they argue benefit landlords at the expense of tenants.
A leaked letter from levelling up minister Jacob Young to Conservative MPs outlines these changes, which campaigners fear will weaken the bill's impact.
One amendment highlighted in Young's letter requires tenants to commit to a minimum six-month term at the start of their tenancy, termed as a "tenant trap."
Furthermore, no-fault evictions will only be prohibited for new tenancies, leaving existing ones vulnerable to this practice until promised court reforms are enacted. Additionally, licensing changes will be delayed pending a review.
These amendments are expected to be included in the Renters Reform Bill when it returns to parliament after the Easter recess. The revelations raise doubts about housing secretary Michael Gove's commitment to ending no-fault evictions, a promise made more than five years ago.
