There are various reasons for a red spot to appear on the eye. It could be a local, i.e. a small one or it could be diffuse i.e. a very large one. It could be temporary or it could be permanent. Temporary red marks are seen after prolonged work particularly in front of a computer with eyes wide open or working in dusty environment, driving in polluted area or going to construction places. Here the eyes appear red and after adequate sleep or rest they become normal again. The same type of red eye can be seen even when there is disturbed sleep or when there is sleeplessness. However what is more alarming is to see a bright red spot appearing in the eye. Though it appears very bad, usually it is innocuous i.e. it is not dangerous. It is something called subconjunctival haemorrhage which is caused by the rupture of some membranes in the eye. It can be because of some trauma, injury or it could be because of vigorous rubbing of the eyes which most of us do in the sleep. So what is important here is not to rub or touch the eyes, but consult a doctor immediately. You can do a cold compress. Normally the doctor adds a few drops. Those drops are to prevent rubbing of the eyes or touching of the eyes. These red spots or blood clots normally gets absorbed on their own and in the first few days it looks as if it is spreading. There is no need to panic about that. Usually depending on the size of these red spots it takes a few days to a week or two to get absorbed completely.
