June 30, the album Hat Full Of Stars, by the incredible Cyndi Lauper, celebrates 27 years since its release.
With Hat Full Of Stars, Cyndi presented a true masterpiece, addressing controversial themes, in a more forceful tone.
The lyrics of many of the songs spoke about the experiences lived by Cyndi and the people who shared the journey with her.
As in Sally's Pigeons, in which Cyndi tells the story of a teenage friend, Sally, who had her life cut short when trying to have an abortion, in a clandestine clinic.
Or Broken Glass, inspired by the physical aggressions committed by her stepfather against her mother.
Or even Lies, about the abuses committed by that same stepfather but against Cyndi herself.
The album also features an incredible anthem against prejudice, A Part Hate, in an allusion to Apartheid, the terrible separation of blacks by whites in South Africa, which still existed at that time (apartheid lasted from 1948 to 1994) but also referring to the growing wave of racism in the USA and the reactions to this prejudice, which generated several violent conflicts. "A Part Hate" is more current than ever, with the recent protests, due to the murder of George Floyd and many others.
This true hymn exposes the monstrous face of racism but ends with a message of hope in each chorus.
The first single was the beautiful Who Let In The Rain, which talks about the end of a romantic relationship "I make the bed and cover where you used to sleep. I'm smoothing over promises made in these sheets".
The song chosen as the second single from the album was the delicious That's What I Think, which addresses the difficulties of modern life in urban centers "the rent is due and the pockets are empty" but also about how good it is to have someone by your side "I forget the world and everything around me, that’s what I think, when I think about you ".
The music was influenced by hip hop rhythms but also the unparalleled pop that Cyndi dominates.
Hat Full Of Stars also had two more singles, Sally's Pigeons and the title track, which was released as a single in Japan only.
The album had everything to take Cyndi back to the top of the charts, if it weren't for the limited vision of record label executives at the time.
But Cyndi knew how to write her story, in her own terms, and that was the way it had to be. Time is the Lord of reason and showed how right she was.
Press play and travel to the wonderful sound of Cyndi Lauper.
