Our second project for this client, our challenge was to create a modern, energy efficient family home on a private road of 1930s properties within a conservation area. To meet their brief for a clean, contemporary home whilst needing to respect the vernacular of the street, we have proposed a playful brick façade to the front elevation, acknowledging the Arts & Crafts aesthetic of the original properties.
To the rear we have used large areas of glazing, opening up the house to the garden and allowing light to flood the open plan interior. Sustainability is of great importance to our client, leading us to design the house to achieve Passivhaus certification which will create a healthy, comfortable environment whilst reducing running costs and the family’s carbon footprint. We took the environmental aspect further, using a cross-laminated timber structure prepared off site to shorten construction time and improving thermal conductivity allowing some reduction in the use of insulation. The CLT structure also reduces thermal bridging, a key tenet of achieving Passivhaus standard.
