This is a vitrectomy to remove floaters, or FOV, and to remove an ERM. 27 gauge vitrectomy has smaller, or thinner, instruments, does not require sutures for closure, has an increased cutting rate of 7500 cuts per minute and valved trocars.
The changes in technology make it less likely to cause a tear in the retina as it becomes even more difficult to "pull" on the retina.
The smaller gauge decreases the chances of post-vitrectomy IOP issues or retroflow bleeding into the eye.
