This is one of the hard drives in my collection that I still actively use. I've owned this drive for many years, and it has been used in a variety of computers during that time. Eventually it ended up in a custom built Windows 98 PC (Pentium II), and that's where it is today.
Yes, the drive is very loud, but the sound hasn't gotten worse over the years despite being used. The noise is loud enough to easily be heard across the room.I don't mind the noise very much though, and it rarely bothers me.
From what I can gather online this drive was part of a value line from Maxtor. The DiamondMax VL 17 line that this drive is a member of contained five different models, with capacities ranging from 4.3GB to 17.4GB. My example is the 6.4GB model.
I don't know anything about the history of this drive before I acquired it, and I don't know what the "iDOT 9911" sticker is supposed to mean. It was completely wiped when it was given to me, so there's no way to know what it was previously used for. I don't have any plans to use this drive for anything different as of right now. It's just going to stay in my Windows 98 PC since it's already got everything installed and it's still working perfectly.
