Dear Friends,
I have dug up from my abandoned files another 1987 Mandarin classic by Taiwan's 齊秦 CHYI Chin. I had also begun its English translation some five years ago, but tossed it aside due to the pandemonium with its pressing priorities around me. But here it is now! This one has an irresistible soothing catchiness about it, drawing you in with its compellingly affectionate melody and vocals of great finesse. It tugs at your heartstrings and warms your soul to the extent that one literally extends one's arms to embrace it!
This melodious composition is of timeless beautiful simplicity! I regret being unable to say the same about the lyrics. Although laced with the most reassuring and gentle pleasantries, its mushy slushiness provokes my wariness and reluctance. Which adult deserves such infinite patience and boundless tolerance? I find it all very questionable. Still, it does speak of patience, compassion and empathy, albeit in a very unwise way. I cannot see myself indulging anyone in such a manner. The narrator is encouraging and promoting the philosophy of: "you can have your piece of cake and eat it too." A most foolish endorsement of another's shameless self-centredness and selfishness! A definite No-Go-Zone in my book. Does he mean that the other party can return for his eternal blessings of love with stable commitment and security AFTER having spent a near lifetime of consuming the whole world to his heart's content? I find it profoundly and thoroughly offensive. And disgusting to the hilt! The are principles and limits to everything in life!
Having said the above, I still enjoy and relish this golden melody. Its gentle sounds of being "easy-on-the-soul" is most enchanting. The vocals are of angelic magnetism. The lyrics are sweet, but childish and maudlin, salvaged via snippets of poetic grace. Given this delicate framework, it still managed to qualify as one of my top favourites. The overall arrangement is perfect. No more needs to be said.
Friends, please note that this is my last upload for 2023. I am not making any promises, but shall do my best to return with more and more agreeable clips in 2024. Until then, I wholeheartedly wish everyone a safe and happy festive season! Merry Christmas and A Most Happy Wholesome New Year! Cheers!
Peace, Love & Liberty,
Yours Sincerely,
