The Markhor population in Pakistan has risen for the tenth year in a row. The growth is attributed to a sustainable trophy hunting program and community involvement.
Once thought to be close to extinction, the Markhor population has grown gradually over the years. In fact, their numbers have doubled in just two decades.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reports that the Markhor population has been growing at an annual rate of 2% since 2014. Prior to this, the IUCN classified the Markhor as an endangered species in 1994 due to overhunting for its meat and horns.
The number of mature Markhors in Pakistan surpassed 2,500 in 2014, which led the IUCN to downgrade the threat level from endangered to near-threatened.
Markhors are the national animal of Pakistan. They are a species of wild goat that are nimble, sure-footed, and have a long winter coat and massive spiral horns that can grow up to 5 feet in length for males.
Markhors can be found in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region, the southwestern Balochistan province and parts of Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
Despite the positive trend in Pakistan, Markhors are declining in numbers worldwide due to a lack of adequate conservation programs.
