Italy recorded 475 coronavirus deaths on Wednesday, the highest ever single-day death toll since the outbreak began in China's Wuhan late last year.
Italian officials confirmed that there were more than 4,000 new cases of Covid-19 diagnosed in a single day.
Health experts in Italy say it is difficult to predict when the number of fatalities and cases will peak.
Italy, which is the worst-hit nation outside Asia, is particularly vulnerable as it has an aging population.
