Have you suffered from pus discharge from your gums? Then it will be your dental access. A tooth abscess is a pocket of pus that is caused by bacterial infection. The abscess can occur at different areas near the tooth for different reasons. A periapical abscess is the abscess which occurs at the tip of the root whereas the periodontal abscess is the abscess which occurs at the gum at the side of the tooth root. A periapical tooth abscess usually occurs as a result of untreated dental cavity or injury or a prior dental restoration. This resulting infection with irritation and swelling can cause an abscess to the tip of the root. Dentists will treat a tooth abscess by either draining it or getting rid of the infection. They may be able to save your tooth by doing certain times root canal treatment and removing the infection. In severe cases where there could be a bone loss or a periodontal abscess your tooth might have to be removed. Leaving a tooth acts as untreated can also become life-threatening complications. So here are certain symptoms and signs which you have to look for to know whether you are suffering from a dental abscess. Severe constant throbbing pain that can spread to your jaw, head or neck region. Pain or discomfort with hot and cold temperature food or drink. Pain and discomfort with the pressure of chewing or biting or even while having your food. Certain cases you might also have fever or you might feel temperature on the tooth side. Swelling in your face, cheek or neck area with the radiating pain towards your head or neck. Tender or swollen lymph nodes can also be one of the signs for it. Certain times you might experience bad breath from your mouth. If you are having any of these symptoms or signs see your dentist promptly. If you are having fever and swelling in your face and you cannot reach a dentist immediately rush to the emergency room and if you are having trouble breathing or swallowing also. These symptoms may indicate that the infection has spread to a deeper part into your jaw bones or your neck or throat region. In case of upper jaw infection it could have also moved to sinus creating a connection between your gums and the sinus. These can also develop a sepsis which is a life-threatening complication and can also spread to the other parts of your body. There are certain risk factors which increase the chances of you getting the infection. They are poor dental habits and care, not taking proper care of your teeth and your gums or your oral hygiene is poor such as your brushing technique is not proper, not brushing two times or not flossing can also increase the risk factor for the problem. The problem may include tooth decay, gum disease tooth abscess which in turn can become a complication. A high diet in sugar frequent eating and drinking of food rich in sugar like sweets or carbonated drinks can also contribute to dental cavities which untreated can lead to the tooth abscess. Here are certain cases where your dry mouth also increases the risk of dental cavities as there is less saliva movement which can flush out the food debris or calculus which cannot maintain your gums or your oral health leading to dental cavities which again can lead to tooth abscess. There are certain systemic conditions like uncontrolled diabetes, immunocompromised patients or conditions and people with low immunity which also contribute to the risk factors. The tooth abscess won't go by itself or without a treatment. If the abscess is being drained by the dentist the pain might reduce but the infection can reoccur if the treatment is not taken promptly. Therefore you have to visit the dentist once the pain is reduced and try to take the treatment completely. There are certain factors which will help you in prevention of the tooth abscess that is by improving your oral hygiene which can be done by regular brushing, drinking lot of water, use of fluoridated toothpaste and using dental floss or even water floss can be recommended, use of healthy food, crunchy vegetables, fiber rich content items and also visiting your dentist twice in a year every six months interval which will help you in getting more advices on maintaining your oral hygiene.
