The phenomena, which was visible in North and South America, Europe, Africa and parts of West Asia and the eastern Pacific, occurs when a total lunar eclipse coincides with a so-called supermoon -- a full moon that's at the closest point of its orbit to Earth, making it appear bigger and brighter than usual. Many also saw the moon bathed in a reddish glow -- a so-called "blood moon."
This video shows the supermoon eclipse over Iowa, the night of September 27-28, 2015. This phenomenon was last observed in 1982 and won't come again until 2033.
