Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) pilot launched by RBI in retail segment has components based on blockchain technology. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued a concept note on Central Bank Digital RUPEE (CBDC) on October 7, 2022. The Digital Rupee or eINR or E-Rupee is a tokenized digital version of the Indian Rupee, to be issued by the Reserve Bank of India as a central bank digital currency. The Digital Rupee was proposed in January 2017 and will be launched in the 2022-23 financial.

e-Rupee or e-rupi is legal tender, not a payment medium. For digital rupee users, SBI has allowed Rs 1 lakh holding limit for the wallet. Users can load or unload up to Rs 25,000 per day, as per the website.
