Thaipusam is a Hindu festival in honour of Lord Murugan,the son of Shiva. In Malaysia the centre of gathering for this important festival is the famed Batu Caves at the fringe of Kuala Lumpur. Atop the 272 steps leading up the caves is a shrine for devotees of Thaipusam. More than a million devotees as well as many local and foreigh spectators join the celebration every year.
This first video takes you on a close up encounter with a group of devotees in trance-like motions on their journey. You can see that their bodies are pierced to assemble offerings such as fruits and yellow coloured flowers. There are other essential offerings too, such as milk. Thedevotees are kept in place by the contibuous beats of the accompanying drum troupe.
